I feel proud to be have witnessed the successful 24 years old long journey of “Aakanksha” right form multi-utility space of Lion’s Den in Jalvihar colony to a massive “Barrier Free Building” at Avanti Vihar, Raipur.
We started this project with just services to 14 children with intellectual disability but now, Aakanksha caters to almost 20 times more number and a more varied spectrum of special children. It has also increased its activities from just providing special education to providing early intervention, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, remedial teaching, rural intervention services, vocational training, parent's training, counseling and College of Special Education offering degree and diploma courses in various disabilities.
Our focus is now to build up Aakanksha as a “Center for Human Resource” so that we can cater to even more special children by empowering the special child’s “Special family”. This can be achieved by sensitizing the entire community not to be overprotective or to feel sorry for these children but to provide an environment which could nurture them to participate equally and exercise equal rights at par with others.
We would suggest organizations/ individuals, working for this special spectrum of the society, not to be dependent only on Government but to modulate more and more self-sustainable models which could be replicated.
My vision is to catalyze our work with the help of digitalization in order to reach the unreached special population through various satellite centers and enhance their abilities.
I not only hope but have full confidence, that my team, parents, patrons, well-wishers, donors and all others who have directly or indirectly helped us to shape our vision for Aakanksha would stand by me to achieve the objectives set for it.
I remain deeply indebted to all who have supported me all along our journey in striving to make "Aakanksha", a center of excellence.
